“There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place” LEVAS II 120

There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place,
And I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord.
There are sweet expressions on each face,
And I know they feel the presence of the Lord.

Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove,
Stay right here with us, filling us with your love.
And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise;
Without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived
When we shall leave this place.

There are blessings you cannot receive
Till you know him in his fullness, and believe.
You’re the one to profit when you say,
“I am going to walk with Jesus all the way.”

If you say He saved you from your sin,
Now you’re weak, you’re bound, and cannot enter in,
You can make it right if you will yield;
You’ll enjoy the Holy Spirit that we feel.

“Come down, O Love divine” Hymn 516

Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine,
and visit it with thine own ardor glowing;
O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,
and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight,
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long,
shall far outpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace, till Love create a place
wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Collect of the Day

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray.

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Psalm 104:25-29, 37 BCP 736

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! *
in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea
with its living things too many to number, *
creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships,
and there is that Leviathan, *
which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due season.

29 You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. *
Hallelujah!

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
all else be nought to me, save that thou art

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father; thine own may I be;
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

9 a.m. (scroll down for 11 a.m. Baptism service)

Nicene Creed, all standing BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People, all standing

In the power of the Spirit and in union with the Father, let us pray through Christ that we may be one with him even as he and the Father are one. John 10:30
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

You guide your Church in the way of truth: stir up among us the gifts of your grace so that we may love others – even our enemies – in the way that you have loved us.  John 15:12; Matthew 5:44
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

Your Spirit fills all of creation: blow into us the winds of your presence so that we may walk in newness of life, exercising love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Romans 6:4; Galatians 5:22-23
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

You have made us the temples of your Spirit: direct our lives in the service of the Gospel so that we may become a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to you and share your Good News with those starved for hope. Romans 12:1; Matthew 11:5
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

Your anointing restores wholeness to a broken world: make us healing vessels that we may give courage to the sick, the dying, wounded veterans, the addicted, the unemployed, the homeless, and refugees so they have their strength renewed and rise up as if on the wings of eagles. Isaiah 40:31
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

You have promised that nothing can separate us from your love:  receive into your keeping those who have died and make us a consolation to those who mourn so they may see you as their light in the darkness. John 1:5
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

Your will is that we become a glittering city built upon a hill: pour out your grace on our city of San Antonio and on all cities and communities of our nation, especially during this time of great pain, distress, anger, and uncertainty, and make us ministers of reconciliation as you have graciously reconciled us to God. 2 Corinthians 5:18
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

As we rejoice in your presence, grant us today the faith of the apostles, the boldness of the prophets, and the strength of the martyrs so that we may run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on you, Lord, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.  Hebrews 12:1-2
Blessed Jesus: Graciously hear us!

The Officiant continues

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Lord God, you are our hope and our confidence. Into your hands we commend the souls of those who have died trusting in your infinite mercy that you will reunite us all on that great day when the dead shall rise in Christ to live with you forever. Amen.

    Thanksgiving over the Water
    BCP 306

    The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying
    The Lord be with you. And also with you.
    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

    The Celebrant continues...
    To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

    The Baptism BCP 307

    Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate, saying

    Clara Carrington, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

    Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying to each one
    You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.

    When this action has been completed for all candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying
    Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

    When all have been baptized, the Celebrant says
    Let us welcome the newly baptized.

    The Celebrant and People welcome the newly baptized
    We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

Both services continue here

praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host:
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP 361

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down [on this day] from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

“Holy, holy, holy” S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues, all standing or kneeling...

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues...

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All baptized Christians are welcome at the Communion table. At the time of the distribution of the sacrament, please come forward as the ushers direct, and kneel or stand at the altar rail. Hold out both hands to receive the Bread. If you choose to receive the Wine, help the Eucharistic Minister guide the chalice to your lips. If you wish to intinct or dip the Bread, hold it prominently, and the intinction cup will be offered to you. Know that receiving one or both elements is fully participating in Communion. If you are not receiving the sacrament, you are invited to come forward to the altar, cross your arms over your chest or put a hand over your heart, and the clergy will give you a blessing.

Communion Music

“Breathe on me, Breath of God” Hymn 508

Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will, to do or to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine
till all this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die;
but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.

After Communion, the Celebrant says
Let us pray.

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food  of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son,  and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn, all standing

“Every time I feel the Spirit” LEVAS II 114

Every time I feel the Spirit,
Moving in my heart, I will pray.
Every time I feel the Spirit,
Moving in my heart, I will pray.

Upon the mountain my Lord spoke,
Out of his mouth came fire and smoke,
All around me looked so fine,
I asked the Lord if all was mine.

Jordan river, chilly and cold,
Chills the body but not the soul.
There ain’t but one train upon this track,
Runs to heaven and runs right back.

Alleluia, alleluia. Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia!
