Opening Hymn, all standing

“Praise, my soul, the King of heaven” Hymn 410: 1-3

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing:
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor to his people in distress;
praise him still the same as ever slow to chide, and swift to bless:
Alleluia, alleluia! Glorious in this faithfulness.

Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia, alleluia! Widely yet his mercy flows.

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.              BCP 355
And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Praise, my soul, the King of heaven” Hymn 410: 4

Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace.

Collect of the Day BCP 213

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 36:5-10 BCP 632

5 Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, *
and your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,
your justice like the great deep; *
you save both man and beast, O Lord.
7 How priceless is your love, O God! *
your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast upon the abundance of your house; *
you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the well of life, *
and in your light we see light.
10 Continue your loving-kindness
to those who know you, *
and your favor to those who are true of heart.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn, all standing

“Christ, whose glory fills the sky” Hymn 7: 1-2

Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ the true, the only Light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise!  Triumph o’er the shades of night:
Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear.

Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee;
joyless is the day’s return, till thy mercy’s beams I see,
till they inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John 2:1-11

The Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to you, Lord Christ.

“Christ, whose glory fills the sky” Hymn 7: 3

Visit them this soul of mine! Pierce the gloom of sin and grief
Fill me, radiancy divine; scatter all my unbelief;
more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

Sermon Bishop Gary Lillibridge
After the sermon, brief silence is kept for meditation on God’s Holy Word.

The Nicene Creed, all standing

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People, all kneeling or seated

Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, grant us your gracious, guiding presence as we prepare to enter the New Year. As we join Christians of every age who have awaited Jesus’ return, lead us into this new time, confident that your promises enshrined in the Bible will be fulfilled. Hear us, O Lord.
For your mercy is great!

Holy Spirit of Truth, call us to repentance at the beginning of this New Year. Forgive us for past unfaithfulness, our silence in the face of injustice, our indifference to callous words, and our inaction amid suffering. Move us from the desire to hoard our wealth toward faithful, unbridled generosity. Help us to share your gifts with those who cry out for daily bread.  Hear us, O Lord.
For your mercy is great!

Jesus, Prince of Peace, great physician and reconciler, heal the divisions in your Church, which makes its place amongst the varied peoples of the world. As you prayed that we should all be one, give us the will to seek unity at the foot of your cross. Be with us on our earthly journey, and be with those sisters and brothers who surround us in the great cloud of witnesses. Hear us, O Lord.
For your mercy is great!

Blessed Emmanuel, God with us, direct our country in the coming year.  Make of us a righteous nation, a bright light upon a hill for all to see and draw strength.  Help us to be a more compassionate people, who are determined that all may receive the true benefits of their labor and the gracious freedoms afforded by this country.  Hear us, O Lord.
For your mercy is great!

Rock of all ages, release us from fear. Lead us forward, even as you have led your Church forward from the cross and empty tomb to the high ground of the resurrection. You have been our faithful guide and companion for twenty centuries, be with us now as we walk unexplored paths into an unknown future. Open us to new possibilities. Renew our hope. Grant us faith to move ahead. Be our strong tower until you fulfill your promise to create a new heaven and new earth. In Christ’s Holy Name we pray. AMEN!

The Celebrant continues with the Invitation to Confession:

Silence is kept before offering the Confession.

Let us also pray for the forgiveness of sins:
Almighty God, our heavenly Father: We have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone.  For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us all our offenses; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your name.  AMEN.

God’s Absolution is pronounced

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving
BCP 367

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

“Holy, holy, holy” S-125

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heav’n and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you nd for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Communion Music

“Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face” Hymn 318

Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face;
here would I touch and handle things unseen;
here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace,
and all my weariness upon thee lean.

Here would I feed upon the Bread of God;
here drink with thee the royal Wine of heaven;
here would I lay aside each earthly load,
here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.

I have no help but thine; nor do I need
another arm save thine to lean upon;
it is enough, my Lord, enough indeed;
my strength is in thy might, thy might alone.

Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness;
mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing Blood.
Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace;
thy Blood, thy righteousness, O Lord, my God.

After Communion, the Celebrant says
Let us pray.

Closing prayers BCP 366

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The priest offers God’s blessing

Closing Hymn

“Immortal, invisible, God only wise” Hymn 423: 1-2, 4

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, your great Name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

Thou reignest in glory, thou rulest in light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
